On Saturday afternoon at Ursuline College, the Urbana University women's basketball team kept pace at the top of the Great Midwest Athletic Conference with a key conference win over the Arrows. Urbana improved to 4-1 in the G-MAC by nearly doubling up the winless Arrows, 95-48.
Urbana remains a half game behind conference leader, Trevecca Nazarene, who soundly defeated G-MAC foe Cedarville 78-40 on Saturday. Trevecca swept the season series with Cedarville (3-2), and the Trojans lead the pack with a 5-1 mark in conference play. Their lone loss was a 12-point defeat at Urbana last weekend, meaning the Blue Knights still control their own destiny with three conference games to play.
Urbana dominated Saturday's affair at Ursuline from the opening tip. All ten Blue Knights had scored before the end of the first half, and it only got worse for the home team in the second half, where Urbana held Ursuline to just 22 points over the final 20 minutes. The Arrows' 48 points were a season-low for an Urbana opponent. The Blue Knights forced 23 turnovers and held the home team to just 31% shooting.
Offensively, Urbana shot better than 50% from the floor and all ten Blue Knights finished with at least four points. Reigning conference player of the Week Ciara Geiger scored a game-high 18 points on 8 of 13 shooting. Andrea Vogel and Katy Barkley each chipped in 13 points. Vogel is now just 15 points shy of 1,000 career points. The senior center also added 4 more blocks to her career record. Fellow senior Jessica Saffold recorded her first double-double of the season after registering a team-high six double-doubles as a junior. Saffold finished with 11 points, 13 rebounds, and she added a team-high 6 assists to go with 3 steals in the win.
Winners of three straight and five of their last six, the Blue Knights (11-13) travel to Cedarville University for an important Tuesday night showdown with the Yellow Jackets. Cedarville dealt the Blue Knights their only conference loss, a 77-74 defeat in Urbana back on January 12th. Tuesday night's game will tip-off at 5:30 p.m. in Cedarville's Callan Athletic Center. The men's game between the Blue Knights and Yellow Jackets will follow at 7:30 p.m.
