Reinhard, Spartans rally past Mansfield Temple

Tyler ReinhardThe Calvary Christian varsity boys basketball team rallied for a road win Tuesday night.

The Spartans headed north to take on the Mansfield Temple Crusaders in a make-up game that was postponed from January. Calvary Christian and Mansfield Temple have developed quite the friendly rivalry the past few seasons, having played each other 16 times the past two years in various sports.

The game started off slowly for Calvary Christian as missed opportunities plagued them in the 1st quarter. Mansfield Temple, meanwhile, started on fire as they hit three 3-point baskets and continuously drove the lane making their layups en route to a 22-11 lead after 1 quarter of play.

The Spartans settled down after that and began the long journey back, chipping away at the lead in the 2nd quarter. They outscored the hosts 18-14 to cut the deficit to 36-29 heading into the break.

The 3rd quarter saw Calvary continue their comeback as they tied the score at 44 with 59 seconds to go in the period. The Spartans won the quarter 17-11 but found themselves still behind 47-46 entering the final stanza.

Calvary Christian finally broke through with a basket by Daniel Wilt at the 6:47 mark to give them their first lead since they were up 5-4. The Spartans increased the lead to 50-47 when Grant Criner scored with 6:09 to go. That lead was short lived, however, as Mansfield Temple nailed a 3 on their next possession, tying the score at 50.

The score remained tied until Tyler Reinhard drove the lane, making a basket at 3:41 giving the Spartans a 52-50 lead. Once again, Mansfield Temple hit a 3-pointer to put them up by 1. The Crusaders increased the lead to 3 with a basket on their next possession with 2:54 left in the contest. With the Spartans trailing 57-54, Daniel Wilt drilled a 3 from the left corner to tie the score with 1:03 remaining. The Crusaders hit a jumper to go up 59-57 with 39 seconds to go.

Tyler Reinhard took over from that point. He was fouled making a basket with 35 seconds to go. He made the foul shot to put the Spartans up 60-59. Tyler scored 5 more points in the remaining seconds to give Calvary Christian a 65-59 win.

Tyler Reinhard led the Spartans with 23 points. Daniel Wilt scored 18 points. Andrew Reinhard recorded his 9th double-double of the season with 16 points and 11 rebounds.

Calvary Christian moves to 19-6 overall. They will host Mansfield Temple Friday night.
