Calvary Takes Church League Title

Calvary Baptist ChurchCalvary Baptist Church won the Logan County Church Softball League tournament Thursday night at Gretna Fellowship Field.  It took two games to determine the champion as Bellefontaine First Church of God, coming out of the losers bracket, forced a second game after winning game one 9-8.  FCOG held off a 7th inning rally by Calvary by stranding the tying run at third to end the game.  Scott Spriggs, Rick Herring and Doug Hager homered to lead First Church.

In game two, Calvary jumped out early in the top of the first with a 3-run homer by Donny Macaluso.  First Church of God answered in the bottom of the inning with three runs of their own to tie the game.  

Each team went scoreless in the second.  The Calvary bats blew up in the top of the third as they sent 16 batters to the plate and scored 12 runs for a 15-3 lead.  They would tack on 6 more in the top of the 4th.First Church of God

First Church of God would put together a rally scoring 4 in the 5th and 5 more in the 6th, but Calvary shut the door in the 7th, after allowing 1 run, for a 22-14 victory.

Donny Macaluso hit two homers (1 a grand slam) and drove in 7 runs for Calvary.

The Logan County Church Softball League takes place each summer at Gretna Brethren Church and is open to all churches in the area. This year teams from First Church of God, Calvary, Gretna, Rushsylvania Church of God, Huntsville United Methodist, Quest, Stony Creek and Vineyard all participated.
