Local softball player helps youth team capture national title

Cagney StewartCagney Stewart of Zanesfield helped her travel softball team, the Lasers Red ‘04, win the ASA 12U “A” Northern National Championship in Bloomington, Indiana, over the weekend.

The Lasers had wins over the Arkansas Cole Minnows 12U (Lonoke, AR), Black Widows ’04 (Glen Carbon, IL), Brooklyn Park Pirates (Brooklyn Park, MN), Kaukauna Ghost Fastpitch (Kaukauna, WI), and the Windy City Ice Blue ’04 (Crestwood, IL) on their way to the championship.

Stewart catches and plays second base for the Lasers. She is a 7th-grader at North Union Middle School.

In addition to being awarded individual 1st place plaques, a team trophy, and a team banner, the team has earned a qualifying berth to attend the 2018 14U “A” ASA USA National Championship that will be held in Bowling Green, Kentucky.
