Urbana University released Jeff Porter of his duties as head men's basketball coach today. The search begins immediately for Porter's replacement.
Urbana University Athletic Director Doug Young hired Porter to take over the Blue Knight men's basketball program in March of 2008. “I would like to thank Coach Porter for all of his outstanding efforts over the past six years," said Young upon the announcement. "He was instrumental in helping to navigate our entire athletics department through the unique challenges of growth that most would not be capable of. Our program has capabilities now that were never deemed possible because of his leadership and will certainly reap the benefits of his dedication for years to come.”
Porter’s Blue Knights suffered through an 0-27 season that ended with a 79-77 last-second defeat in the first round of the Mountain East Conference Tournament Tuesday. Urbana owned a second half lead in 16 of their 27 losses this season. Eight times, the Blue Knights led or were tied with five minutes to play. Porter was 48-117 during his six seasons at UU, including a 1-37 mark in his last 38 games. His 2010 squad posted the first winning season for the men’s basketball program since the 1997 team made the NAIA National Sweet 16.
