Alice Jean Watkins Hughes

Alice Jean Watkins Hughes left for Glory on January 8, 2017. She was born in Bellefontaine on June 8, 1929 to the late Marion Victor Watkins and Ruth Wells Watkins.

Alice Jean will be joining her siblings Bill, Burton, Bud, Gwen and Olive, and her cousin, Ruth Harriet, who was like a sister. She was also preceded in death by sons-in-law Roger Grunden and David Lusby.

She graduated from Bellefontaine High School with the Class of 1947, and enjoyed attending many of her class reunions. Alice retired from D.A.B. after 32 years. She then began her next career of making children of all ages smile when she joined her sister-in-law at Marianna’s Doll Shop on West Columbus Avenue. She enjoyed her 10 years there, the people she met, and the closeness with Marianna and the girls. She also volunteered with the Mary Rutan Guild. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday School and Bible School through the years. Alice loved dancing, attending the activities of her grandchildren and playing cards, especially with her Tuesday Night Bunch, who were some of her best friends.

She is survived by her children, Jan (Tim) Smith of Bellefontaine, Judy Lambert of St. Croix, USVI, Jeff Hughes of Marathon Shores, Florida, LeeAnn Lusby of Bellefontaine, Gene (Marty) Hughes of Weeki Wachee, Florida, David Hughes (Kandi) of Clermont, Florida, sister-in-law Marianna Watkins with Cassie, Buddy, Tim, and Tom (whom she loved dearly), and special niece Cheryl Toschlog of Richmond, Indiana. She had 13 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Michelle Garver will officiate a funeral service at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, January 11, 2017 at Harper Community Church, 3146 County Road 25 North, Bellefontaine. Visitation will be Tuesday, January 10, 2017 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Eichholtz Daring & Sanford Funeral Home & Cremation Center, 321 N. Main Street, Bellefontaine, and one hour prior to the service on Wednesday at the church. Burial will be in Bellefontaine Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Mary Rutan Hospital Guild, Attn. Frank Gliha, 205 Palmer Ave., Bellefontaine, Ohio 43311.
