The Bellefontaine Middle School welcomed back students for the 2013-2014 school year on Monday evening with the middle school open house.
Students and families came to the annual event to get schedules, lockers, and financial information while also checking out the brand new school facilities.
2013 marks the first year the new Bellefontaine middle and elementary schools will be utilized. The buildings mark over five years of work by school officials and community members to bring an updated and state-of-the-art learning environment to Bellefontaine students.
The schools’ new location at 1201 Ludlow Road takes elementary and middle school students closer to high school facilities than their previous locations.
The new schools offer the latest advancements of technology with multiple computer labs and integrated technology throughout the building.
Bellefontaine Middle School Principal Shanel Henry said both the facilities layout and utilization of technology make it a very positive learning environment.
Henry also noted the effort made by the community to make the building possible. She says a major goal of the district is to let students take pride in the schools and make them their own.
Henry says school officials and staff are excited to have students back for another school year and are eager for it to start.

The new middle school serves students in sixth, seventh, and eighth grades. A unique part of the school is the fact that classrooms are oriented by grades within three separate stories. The lowest level of the classroom wing is sixth, the second is seventh, and the top level is eighth grade. The middle level is connected to the shared parts of the school including the cafeteria, gym, and music rooms among others.
One parent at the open house commented the setup allows students to go “up and out” of the school. Observations by students included it being a “neat” and “cool” building.
The Bellefontaine Elementary School will serve students from Kindergarten through second grade and the middle school will serve sixth through eighth. Students in third, fourth, and fifth grades will be attending the newly named Bellefontaine Intermediate School, previously the middle school.
