The Bellefontaine Police Department has a new lieutenant.
Sergeant Rick Herring (pictured) has been promoted to succeed Ron Birt, who retired in early March.
Herring and fellow sergeant Allen Shields applied for the position.
The Bellefontaine Civil Service Commission certified the results Thursday afternoon.
Herring, 50, has been with the police department for 21 years. He's been a sergeant for over 12 years.
Herring is an active member of the Rushsylvania Church of Christ and a former member of the Logan County Family and Children First Council. He has been a youth baseball coach, too.
The swearing-in date has not been determined.
