Anna Plataniotis and Jeff Miller from Second Harvest Food Bank were on hand at the regular Bellefontaine Kiwanis Club meeting Thursday to give the members an update on its recent activities.
It was explained to the members that food "banks" and food "pantries" provide two separate services. The Second Harvest Food Bank (and others like it) actually collects food and other items, and then offers what has been collected to pantries, which distributes the food and necessities to those in need.
Plataniotis and Miller reported that one in four children in Ohio go to bed hungry and many seniors must make the choice between spending what little money they have on food or medicine. That is where Second Harvest comes in. Second Harvest and Catholic Charities serve Logan, Clark, and Champaign Counties, and the mobile food pantry can serve over 150 families in under-served areas in less than two hours. Second Harvest and their partner agencies served over 300,000 meals to 64,000 people in 2012.
In club business, Nick Brown and Marcus St. Clair were inducted as new members. Tim Reeves, Pastor of the Middleburg UMC, is scheduled to speak to the club at the next meeting.
