Two men arrested following city pursuit, crash

Two Bellefontaine men were arrested on alcohol-related charges after a brief pursuit in the city Thursday night around 10:15.

The Bellefontaine Police Department reports that Andrew Herford (pictured), 19, of 316 Eaton Street, was driving a 2001 Chevy Blazer without any headlights and all over the road in the 1500 block of South Main Street.

Herford then turned westbound on Carter Avenue and northbound on Plumvalley Street.

He attempted to flee in the 400 block of Plumvalley. After going off the right side of the road, the vehicle suddenly stopped in the 300 block of Plumvalley.

Herford took off on foot. The vehicle continued to roll forward and hit a street sign at the corner of Plumvalley and Auburn.

About 40 minutes later, Herford was caught by a sheriff's deputy in the 800 block of Harding Street near Bellefontaine High School.

Bellefontaine K9 Arco helped officers track the scent of the suspect.

Herford was charged with felony fleeing and eluding, OVI, no operator’s license, failure to control, and hit skip.

He was out of breath and reeked of alcohol. He was covered in mud, briars, thorns, leaves, and weeds.

Steven Cottingham (pictured), 23, of 500 Gunntown Road, Apt. B7, was passed out in the passenger's seat. He was charged with public intoxication and wrongful entrustment.

The SUV is registered to Cottingham's father.

Both men were lodged in the Logan County Jail.

Herford was combative at the jail and refused a breath test.
