Semi strikes anhydrous tank near local school

A semi struck an anhydrous ammonia storage tank (pictured) just north of West Liberty-Salem Monday morning around 6:20.

The Champaign County Sheriff's Office along with the Macochee Joint Ambulance District and West Liberty Fire Department responded to the Heritage Cooperative anhydrous ammonia distribution site at 7143 Upper Valley Pike.

The collision caused a small anhydrous leak when a supply line to the tank ruptured.

The accident happened when a semi carrying floral products attempted to turn around in the parking lot. The impact moved the tank about six inches, which created a small hazardous materials leak.

The semi then ran into a small outbuilding and moved the structure off its foundation. Finally, the truck knocked over a light pole and slid off the roadway into a ditch.

No one was injured.

The accident remains under investigation.
