A local man who was arrested on multiple charges following a brief foot pursuit near Northeastern Elementary Tuesday afternoon faces several felony charges after a struggle with an off-duty Logan County Sheriff's deputy.
Kodi Smotherman (pictured), 21, at large, was walking near the intersection of North Hayes Street and North Avenue around 3:40 p.m. when the off-duty deputy saw him.
The deputy knew that Smotherman was wanted on warrants.
A foot pursuit ensued. The deputy caught up with Smotherman outside 501 North Hayes Street.
Smotherman attempted to take the deputy’s weapon from his holster while the deputy was attempting to take him into custody outside the residence. He also attempted to strike the deputy with his fists.
The deputy used pepper spray and attempted to deploy his Taser on Smotherman.
The Bellefontaine Police Department responded and helped the deputy handcuff Smotherman in a rear bedroom.
An officer found drug paraphernalia on the suspect.
Smotherman was arrested on the outstanding warrants and charged with aggravated robbery (for attempting to take the deputy's gun), assault, resisting arrest, and possession of drug paraphernalia.
He suffered injuries to his lip while struggling with the deputy.
