Riverside grad shot in the line of duty

Jacob HeaberlinA Franklin County Sheriff's Deputy with local ties was shot in the line of duty Saturday night around 6:30.

Authorities report that Riverside grad Jacob Heaberlin attempted to stop an erratic driver on the west side of Columbus.

The driver shot Heaberlin in the lower abdomen.

Moments later, the suspect, Darrell Bruffy, 55, of Orient, was shot and killed by other officers.

Heaberlin, 29, underwent surgery at Grant Medical Center.

Bruffy crashed near a gas station and fired at Heaberlin when he approached the scene.

Bruffy was also wanted for violating a protection order.

No one else was hurt.

Heaberlin graduated from Riverside in 2006. He has been with the sheriff's office for seven years.

Deputies continue their investigation.
