Teen charged with murder ruled competent for trial

Champaign County Courthouse14-year-old Donovan Nicholas is competent to stand trial for killing his father's longtime girlfriend.

Champaign County Juvenile Judge Lori Reisinger ruled on the motion Thursday afternoon.

On April 6th, Nicholas stabbed and shot Heidi Fay Taylor, 40, at their 4328 Valley Pike residence (southwest of Urbana).

Taylor was pronounced dead at the scene.

Nicholas told a Champaign County dispatcher that an alternate personality was responsible for the murder.

The following day, Nicholas was charged with aggravated murder in Champaign County Juvenile Court.

His attorney says the teen has mental health issues.

Judge Reisinger has not ruled on the prosecutor’s request to transfer the case to adult court.

Nicholas will undergo an evaluation before the judge decides if the case will be bound over to common pleas court.

Nicholas remains lodged in the Central Ohio Youth Center in Marysville.
