Judge says he wants Serna case resolved before classes begin at WL-S

An arraignment hearing was held for 17-year-old Ely Serna Thursday afternoon in Champaign County Common Pleas Court.

Judge Nick Selvaggio said he wants the West Liberty-Salem shooting case to be resolved before school starts.

West Liberty-Salem students are scheduled to start classes the day after Labor Day.

Selvaggio said it's important to him that the case be finished before school starts so that it could give staff as well as students closure.

A trial date has been set for August 21st. Serna's bond was kept at $1 million and a not guilty plea was entered on Serna's behalf by the defense.

Serna faces two counts of attempted murder, three counts of felonious assault, six counts of improperly discharging a firearm, and single counts of inducing panic and illegal conveyance of a deadly weapon in a school.

Serna has been accused of bringing a shotgun to school and shooting 17-year-old Logan Cole twice on January 20th.

Selvaggio also set two pre-trial dates for July 13th and August 7th.

Champaign County Prosecutor Kevin Talebi said he would like the jury to visit the high school.
