A city man was arrested on multiple felony charges Wednesday afternoon for the robbery and fire at Smith Jewelers.
Michael Rhodus, 24, of 224 North Detroit Street, Apt. 9, was charged with two counts of breaking and entering and single counts of arson and receiving stolen property.
The breaking and entering along with arson charge are felonies.
Authorities were led to Rhodus through tips.
On Tuesday night, another business showed signs of an attempted break-in. Detectives were able to identify a possible suspect through surveillance video.
Another business owner contacted police after Rhodus tried to sell them new jewelry and watches.
Police searched Rhodus’s apartment Wednesday afternoon and recovered a large amount of stolen jewelry.
Smith Jewelers was set on fire Tuesday morning around 5:45.
The fire was contained to the jewelry store, but other downtown businesses suffered smoke damage.
