The Humane Society Serving Logan County located at 2521 Route 68 North, Bellefontaine, announced Friday, effective immediately, they will be doing business as the Top of Ohio Pet Shelter.
The change will hopefully, according to the shelter’s board of directors, fix two public misconceptions. First, it is incorrectly believed that the shelter is a government entity, funded entirely by Logan County. Second, many believe that the name implies that the shelter is affiliated with the Humane Society of the United States.
The Top of Ohio Pet Shelter is a not-for-profit corporation independent of Logan County government. Funding comes from kennel fees, donations, bingo, grants, and other fundraising efforts. The shelter is under contract with the Logan County Commissioners to provide dog shelter services.
Top of Ohio Pet Shelter has three main objectives: provide shelter and facilitate adoption for homeless dogs and cats in the county, educate the public about pet ownership, and protect animals from neglect and cruelty.
